Nefarmakološko liječenje boli predstavlja važnu sastavnicu liječenja mišićnokoštane boli. Terapijski modaliteti kao što su površinska toplina ili hladnoća, terapijski ultrazvuk, laser i/ili elektroterapija se naširoko primjenjuju u raznim mišićnokoštanim bolestima i stanjima. Oni imaju brojne prednosti pred drugim intervencijama koje modifi ciraju bol. Međutim, relativno je malo visokokvalitetnih istraživanja koja su rasvijetlila mehanizme analgetskog učinka fi zikalnih agensa, a nedostaju i dovoljno uvjerljivi nalazi koji bi poduprli njihovu primjenu u liječenu bolnih stanja. Osnova nefarmakološkog liječenja kronične mišićnokoštane boli su edukacija, medicinska gimnastika i kognitivno-biheviorijalna terapija, idealno u kombinaciji, a kroz multidisciplinarne programe liječenja temeljene na biopsihosocijalnom modelu boli. Prema dostupnim podacima nije moguće zaključiti treba li kod pojedinog pacijenta s kroničnom boli primijeniti programe kognitivno-biheviorijalnog liječenja ili samo aktivno konzervativno liječenje. Potrebne su nove studije koje bi razjasnile koji tip ili način nefarmakološkog liječenja, njegov intenzitet, trajanje i progresiju treba primijeniti, a shodno specifi čnim ishodima važnima za pojedinog bolesnika.
